I have been working for quite awhile with the Ultimate Deployment Appliance to enable builds of ESX and ESXi for the environment. It works well, really well, for getting a machine up and running quick.
I had been planning to move the installation to USB instead of spinning disks. Well I found this interesting tidbit on the VMware KB stopping this type of behaviour.

But also found this great site for tools for building more detailed scripted builds.
